…everthing from a mostly traditional staging of Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci to an opera pastiche set in a Galaxy far, far away (Star Wars…the Opera). I’ve directed a wide variety of shows with performers at various levels of artistic experience. I truly believe that in pairing the creative spirit with a detail-oriented concept, each performance can inspire the audience to take the journey.
Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci – Figment Festival on Governer’s Island, NYC
Die Fledermaus – Traditional and fun
A Hand of Bridge – A piece that directs itself
Die Zauberflöte – Traditional with a major twist (born out of an overabundance of male participants in the Opera Workshop, this mostly traditional production, takes on a Fierce twist as it is revealed that the Three Ladies are no ladies at all and the Queen of the Night is a real Queen!)
Amor & Psyche and Arminio in Armenia –(as co-director of Opera Feroce) traditional drama and slapstick
Various scenes programs include:
Find Your Voice – troupe of Mime, frustrated with the limitations of their movements, develop such a passionate need to express, that their lives take on a shocking twist of operatic proportions
Fierce Moments in Opera – traditional staging featuring Fierce voices singing Fierce scenes from Fierce operas (original production of Opera Feroce)
A Walk in the Park – a program of operatic scenes in which the audience takes on the perspective of sitting in the park, people-watching while various stories play out in front of them. Only able to see and hear part of the story, each audience member is forced to fill in the blanks for him/herself.
Star Wars…the Opera – R2-D2 lost in the desert comforts “himself” by singing “Sola, perduta, abbandonata”. When the captured Princes Leah confronts Darth Vadar, “Who do you think you are?!”, Vadar takes an iconic breath and tunefully replies, “I am the very model of a modern major general!”
